The Trip is About to Begin

My little adventure will start shortly. In the process of planning, I ran into an article entitled “Vacationers Happier, but Most not Happier After a Holiday,” which suggested that much of the pleasure from a trip derives from planning for as well as experiencing a vacation. We shall see.

This cross-country trip is not an attempt to find myself. I don’t consider myself lost. It is not an heroic journey like the Iliad and the Odyssey. It is hard to be a hero in a comfortable, air-conditioned car, listening to music.

Although I find driving theraputic, I anticipate enjoying this trip because I love this country. I love the beautiful diversity of its landscape. I love the feeling of possibility a drive through this country provides. But most of all, I love the people here. I love the entrepreneurial attitude of little shop and restaurant owners. I love the people who work hard waiting tables and preparing meals (Helen’s BBQ). I love those providing all the conveniences we take for granted, while raising families. I love the fact that I can drive thousands of miles and feel at home  wherever I stop.

This is also a photography trip, where I will try to arrange to be at  photogenic places along my route.

Here are two maps showing my trip plans. Not all of the stops are overnight stops. Some are just places I plan to visit along the way. Essentially, Las Vegas will mark the halfway point.
